Description[]

Launched in the late 1970s, Honda's New Racing project set out to build a 4-stroke 500-cc V4 motorcycle that would win the World Grand Prix road racing championship[1]—then considered an impossibility given the domination of two-stroke bikes in those days. Honda engineers created the NR500, powered by something then unheard of: a V4 with oval pistons, two conrods per piston, and 8 intake and exhaust valves per cylinder. Revving twice as fast as its two-stroke counterpart, this ultra high-speed engine produced a clear, smooth sound unlike that of any engine built before it.

Although the NR500 failed to win the world championship, Honda in 1992 released a production model to show that NR500 technology could be used in street bikes to produce a totally new kind of riding experience. Honda created a street-legal NR with an engine displacement boosted to 750 cc—then the uppermost limit for big bikes in Japan. Priced at over £30,000, this machine was within the reach of only a very few. The ultralight carbon fiber fairing was mounted to a beautifully buffed aluminum twin-spar frame. Other features included a titanium-coated windshield, a flowing exhaust pipe that split into twin mufflers in the rear fairing, and a cantilever swing arm made of solid cast aluminium.

Straddle the bike and your eyes are immediately drawn to the digital speedometer with amber-coloured backlighting. The reflective display has both depth and a luxurious feel to it. Start the engine, and it roars to life with a sound that only a V4 can produce. The sound is different, but not excessive—full, rich, and pleasing to the ears.

High-performance bike that it is, this machine also has the faithful response to handle corners at full lean. In other words, the bike is not just mechanically and visually stunning, but also accessible too.
