Description[]

After making its name as a manufacturer of 4-stroke motorcycles, Honda in 1983 released its first road-going 2-stroke bike, the 250cc MVX250. However, the MVX250's three-cylinder engine disqualified it from most races, which stipulated no more than two cylinders in the 250cc class. So in 1984 Honda, having made up its mind to win the Grand Prix with a 2-stroke machine, released the NS250R, an aluminium-framed, V-twin-engined machine. Rolling into motorcycle showrooms at the same time was its street-legal, race-ready twin, the RS250R, built on the same platform.

The bike's main rivals in the 2-stroke arena were the Yamaha RZ250RR, the Suzuki RG250, and the Kawasaki KR250. The intense rivalry among these machines made for passionate fans and is said to have played a major role in triggering the replica boom in the late 1980s.

The bike generates 45 bhp—the voluntary limit for this class in those days. Crouched between the sporty seat cowl and the full fairing in front, many a young rider hearing the engine roar to life at high r.p.m. fell instantly in love. ATAC pipes control the exhaust flow (but were later replaced by an RC valve exhaust timing control system). Consequently, a torque valley was more noticeable, and combustion felt uneven at medium to high speeds compared to current models, but this V-twin engine still had immeasurable impact on the competition at the time.

That was because the V-twin, with its 90-degree cylinder bank angle and well-balanced primary inertial force, generated only minimal vibration. The slim chassis also permitted a greater concentration of the bike's mass. Seeing the many advantages of the NS250R, Honda's competitors eventually switched to V-twin technology, too.
