Description[]

In 1979, Honda returned to the World Grand Prix after a 12-year hiatus. Its machine of choice was the four-stroke NR500 - a daring choice considering that two-stroke bikes were at the height of their popularity at the time. The NR500's secret weapons were its oval-piston engine and then-revolutionary aluminum semi-monocoque frame.

But after winning the 1981 Suzuka 200-kilometer road race, the NR500 failed to register any additional significant victories. So Honda in 1982 released a two-stroke 500-cc GP machine developed in parallel with the NR500 - the NS500. This machine was powered by a V3 with a 112-degree cylinder vee angle and a unique cylinder layout: the first and third cylinders faced upward and had rear exhaust, while the second cylinder faced forward and had bottom exhaust. The NS500 racked up two wins in its debut year and won the manufacturer's championship in '83 and '84 as well, thus re-establishing Honda's solid foothold in the World Grand Prix.

A replica of the NS500, the NS400R was released in 1985. Like the NS500, it had a two-stroke V3 but a different cylinder layout - two cylinders oriented horizontally towards the front and one vertically. In addition, the cylinder vee angle was a tight 90 degrees. The single-piece cylinders were coated with a nickel-silicon carbide composite for superior durability and anti-seizing properties.

The ATAC (Automatic Torque Amplification Chamber) boosted torque by monitoring engine speed and automatically adjusting the exhaust displacement of the two front-facing cylinders. The result was maximum power of 59 hp at 8,500 r.p.m. for the Japanese-market model.

Other details were similar to those of the NS500, such as the aluminum double-cradle frame and the 16-inch front wheel. TRAC anti-dive forks in front and a Pro-Link rear suspension further improved the NS400R's dynamic performance.
