Description[]

After being released as the NS250R, this two-stroke V-twin underwent a name change in the 1986 model year, becoming the NSR250R. The bike then evolved rapidly, undergoing a complete redesign in 1988 and again only one year later. A PGM control unit gave the bike advanced electronics, and the engine improvements made in this very short period of time were nothing short of amazing.

Other numbers reflect this dramatic transformation into a road-going racer. For instance, the 26-degree steering head angle of the '88 models—typical for street bikes—was tightened to 24 degrees, more befitting a racing bike.

Despite having achieved extreme performance with the '89 models, the NSR underwent yet another comprehensive makeover in 1990, attaining more refined performance. The bike's electronics continued to evolve until the last model year of 1994, but even today the 1990 NSR is seen as the model that truly entered the realm of perfection.

The twin-spar frame grew longer and narrower, reflecting the design strategy—still seen in sportbikes today—of increasing stiffness longitudinally while reducing it laterally. Rear wheel size was reduced from 18 to 17 inches. Shorter plug caps were used to avoid interference with the front wheel, and the distance between the front wheel and engine was reduced by a quarter of an inch to shift more load to the front. These changes make for faithful response without understeer.

The advanced PGM III electronic control system adjusts the PGM carburettor, RC valves, and ignition timing according to gear position, for easier power delivery and handling even on demanding roads.

The NSR250R SE is a special grade equipped with a dry multidisc clutch and adjustable dampers.
