Description[]

Honda's V-Four program began in 1982. Until the V-twin SP-1 replaced the RC45 as Honda's superbike engine of choice in 2001, the V-Four engines played a crucial role in Honda motorsports.

The same was true of Honda's 400cc bikes, which evolved in lockstep with the 750cc models, going back to 1982's VF750F. The VF400F appeared in 1982 and starting the following year—when the popularity of motorsports began to skyrocket in Japan—was a major competitor in the All-Japan Championship. The VFR400R appeared in 1986 with a twin-spar aluminium frame fitted with a gear-driven camshaft engine. Upgrades for 1987 included a single-sided swing arm. The motorsports version, the RVF400, was nearly unbeatable in domestic races and greatly enhanced the image of V4 bikes.

This particularly bike, the 1989 model, incorporated even more motorsports know-how and is structurally similar to the limited-edition VFR750R (RC30). This 400-cc V4 replica was built purely for racing-circuit performance and is better known among fans by its model number, NC30. Open the throttle, and even the exhaust sound bespeaks the machine's amazing efficiency. The engine cranks out torque like only a Honda with unequal cylinder-firing interval technology can do. With a 53-inch wheelbase—short for the 250cc class—the bike has a greater concentration of mass than others in its class, and feels more compact than an inline-4-cylinder machine. The sharp handling is pure motorsports, allowing the rider to hit a racing line dead-on or tackle winding roads with awe-inspiring precision.

The NC30 gave way to the NC35 (RVF400) in 1994, reaching the height of perfection for a 400cc sportbike. But, alas, the popularity of such bikes had already begun to wane by then, and the line was discontinued the following year.
