Description[]

In the 1980s, Japanese sportbikes in the 250cc to 400cc range—the primary market segment in Japan—underwent extensive redesigns nearly every model year, with performance improving at a rapid clip. This '80s "arms race" culminated in the 1989 Honda VFR400R, a high-performance, high-spec bike that was essentially a street version of the RVF400, a racing bike that competed in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race and the All-Japan F3 Championship.

This VFR400R is powered by a unique Honda engine—a water-cooled 4-stroke dual-overhead-cam V4 with a 90-degree cylinder angle and gear-driven camshafts. Also employed is a direct rocker arm design in which the camshaft is positioned on the valve axis, which greatly reduces friction loss.

The twin-spar closed-box aluminium frame makes for a chassis stiff enough for a 750cc bike. Then there's a 41-mm-diameter fork, floating-disc brakes, and an aluminum single-sided swing arm.

This particular racing-ready bike is customised with F3-grade pistons, camshaft, conrods, and ignition control unit, as well as polished intake and exhaust ports. The racing kit is well-matched to the modified engine and the high-r.p.m. racing muffler.

The bike rolls on magnesium rims, and the fork settings, rear suspension, and links have been set for racing-grade handling.
