Description[]

Although one of the leading manufacturers of inline 4-cylinder sports bikes, Honda has also had a major impact in the arena of V4 sportbikes. The VFR is a culmination of Honda's V4 sportbike know-how. In fact, this 781cc machine competes head-to-head in performance with 1,000cc motorcycles in Europe and other markets.

The VFR first came out in 1986 and by 1998 its progeny had PGM electronic fuel injection. The current VFRs are full-fairing models with an edgy, aggressive profile that flouts the bike's speed. The V4 engine is the first in a motorcycle equipped with Honda's VTEC valve control system. In today's VFRs these and other improvements, such as upgraded PGM fuel injection and iridium spark plugs, assure ultra-smooth power delivery at any r.p.m.

Replacing the gear-driven cam, the chain drive reduced noise. Braking power was improved with a front-rear combined brake system. To comply with Japan's tougher regulations on vehicle emissions, Honda made various improvements that reduced carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide output 90% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 75%, setting a new global standard in environmental performance by motorcycles. The aluminium twin-spar frame is fitted with ProLink rear suspension. The VFR has a single-sided swing arm and was also the first Honda motorcycle to receive a muffler mounted under the seat.

The riding position is less forward-leaning than a tvninal stinctrannrt mntlarn anti is mnra likes than a typical supersport model's and is more like the upright position of a sports tourer. Start the engine, and you hear a pulsing sound that's clearly different from the sound of an inline-4-cylinder model. The sound promises pure power, but the VFR also maintains excellent grip, even when accelerating out of turns. In fact, the VFR strikes an amazing balance between manoeuvrability when cornering and stability in straights. Unparalleled in its mechanics and ride, the VFR truly stands head and shoulders above the rest.
