Description[]
When it was unveiled in 1982, the VT25OF was the world's first-ever 250cc class bike to be fitted with a water-cooled, four-stroke dual overhead cam 4-valve V-twin engine. With its 90- degree cylinder bank angle, this V-twin produced essentially no primary vibration. This not only improved comfort but also allowed a lighter frame. With its high compression ratio (11 to 1) and slanted VD carburettor, this VT250F kicked out 140 bhp of power per litre displacement—the most power of any four-stroke production bike up to that time. The engine also redlined at a previously unheard-of 12,500 r.p.m.
The VT250F was also the first 250-cc-class motorcycle to have a hydraulic clutch and the first to have inboard ventilated disc brakes. ProLink suspension was installed in the rear, and the whole package rolled on 16-inch rims on the front and rear.
Other features included an aerodynamic bikini fairing—listed in catalogues as an "instrument visor" for regulatory reasons—developed in Honda's NR ( "New Racing" ) Project, as well as forged-duralumin separate handlebars, cast aluminum foot peg mounts, a storage compartment under the rear cowl, and other practical niceties.
Compact, light, and slim like a V-twin should be, this VT250F also made standing at a stop a breeze. In addition to raw power, the engine also delivered the low-range torque needed for stop-and-go driving on city streets. However, it was on winding roads where this bike was truly exciting to ride. Helped by the 16-inch wheels, the VT250F had excellent response to tackle corners at high speed or to slow down ahead of the turn and then point the bike for a roaring exit. When it comes to latitude in choosing a racing line, no other bike came close to the VT250F. Along with the RZ250 two-stroke sportbike, it was one of the fastest bikes of its size in its day.
