"Born on the battlefield, a demanding request from the US Army resulted in the father of the modern 4x4."
If you trace back the roots of the modern SUV category, you will eventually arrive at this compact four-wheel drive car which began development in 1940 by request from the US Army during the Second World War.
The US Army called upon Bantam, Ford and Willys to develop and produce their own prototypes based on a design by Bantam. Each company produced over 1500 such vehicles which were put into military service. The best performing of these prototypes, the Willys MA, was further improved upon to create the MB and officially entered service with over 360,000 units produced.
This model would serve as the inspiration for every Jeep model to come later.
After the war, Willys registered the Jeep trademark and released a civilian model based on the MB. Thanks to the numerous accounts from returning soldiers of the MB's performance and off-road ability, the car was a huge success for Willys.
With a ladder frame and solid axle as its base, this is the car that proved to later generations the superiority of simple, hardy construction when combined with a four-wheel drive system.
One cannot understand the importance of the MB to the history of four-wheel drive cars.
Legend Cars (GT7)[]
Jeep is surely one of the world's most familiar and beloved brands. The company has a long and storied history... And there's no doubt this Willys MB (Military, Model B) was one of its greatest successes. Interestingly, Willys didn't actually come up with the name 'Jeep'. Rather, it derived from the American Bantam Car Company's prototype utility vehicle for the military. This car was designated 'GP' for general purpose, which is where the name 'Jeep' came from. After the Second World War, the company decided to focus on mass-producing Jeeps, and trademarked the name. The company's 'civilian jeeps' were all based on the classic Willys MB. Having developed a good reputation during the war, it was initially marketed for use in agriculture. After the company began worldwide production under license, Jeeps were manufactured and loved all over the world. This would prove to be an absolutely decisive factor in the growth of the Jeep brand we know and love today.

This is where Jeep culture started. A purely functional design to meet military needs. Now, the form-follows-function approach doesn't always guarantee success. Only on rare occasions does it work—and in this case the vehicle became an icon. The engineers who worked on this program... Must have had a good sense of proportion and high design standards. They knew precisely where to work their magic. In some cases, the depth of the flanges helped to strengthen the panels so that thinner pieces could be used. Truly impressive work!

Trivia[]
- Its only paint color was listed as belonging to BAC in GT Auto's paint shop; it was later fixed in version 1.11.
- Its roof can be removed in GT Auto.
- In GT Auto, the Type B front option (without the widebody installed) is a wire cutting device. During World War II, Allied soldiers were seriously injured or even killed by piano wire traps placed by the Axis. Said device protects the occupants and cuts the wire.
