Description[]

The Ninja GPZ900R appeared in 1984, a time when other manufacturers were taking their bikes into litre territory. But Kawasaki instead chose a 900cc class engine for the Ninja, aiming for recording-setting speed with a light, slim, aerodynamic design. The result was perhaps their greatest motorcycle since the legendary Z1 came out in 1972.

The liquid-cooled four-stroke, four-cylinder 908cc engine had dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder driven by a side cam chain. The side cam chain, wnich would later be imitated by many, was used to enable a straight intake tract and a tight riding position. The three-piece diamond frame allowed a low engine position, for good lean angles and optimum stiffness and weight distribution.

Designed using advanced aeronautic technology, the fairing had unbelievable aerodynamic properties and helped the Ninja achieve a top speed of 150 mph—world-record speed in those days. Running the quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds, the Ninja could easily leave litre class bikes in its dust.

The semi-air-assisted fork was also equipped with a then-popular anti-dive device and held a 16-inch rim. In the rear, an 18-inch rim was paired with Unitrack link suspension.

The long petrol tank makes for a slightly forward-leaning riding position. With a built-in balance shaft, the Ninja delivers the kind of smooth acceleration that you'd expect from a four-cylinder engine. At top speed, the engine performs so well, and the bike hugs the asphalt so stably, you won't want to slow down. The Ninja was like no other big bike of its time.

The Ninja also shines on winding roads, with solid, reliable braking power thanks to the 16-inch front wheel and nimble corning ability that lets the rider nail any cornering line.

Although the front wheel size grew to 17 inches starting with the A7, the Ninja retained its unique styling and one-of-a-kind ride right up to its final model, the A19. The bold, outside-the-box approach of beating litre class rivals with a 900cc bike will be an inspiration to bike builders for years to come.
