Description[]
Released in 1982 to commemorate Eddie Lawson's AMA Superbike Championship win, the Kawasaki Z1000 R1 was widely known as the Eddie Lawson Replica.
In the U.S., the early 1970s saw the emergence of higher displacement super sports machines, which soon gained popularity on the amateur racing circuit. Eyeing this phenomenon, AMA held the first official race for these machines at Laguna Seca in 1973. This was the beginning of the racing market for specially tuned production bikes. After seeing a steady climb in popularity, these races were turned into a series in 1976. The regulations at the time called for standard exhausts and carburettors, as well as exterior appearance. Engine displacement could be increased, up to 1000cc. Cams and pistons could also be replaced. Between 1978 and 1980, these regulations underwent a gradual change -extractor-type exhaust systems, with header pipes that merged together, and 31mm diameter aftermarket carburettors were allowed, and the maximum displacement was raised to 1025cc.
To meet these changes in regulation, Kawasaki modified their base machines: the Z1, KZ100 and Mk.II. Their competitors, however, continued to release new models with major performance improvements. To compete against such machines, Kawasaki came up with the lighter and more powerful Z1000 J. The AMA racing machines based on this model were able to increase their competitiveness by implementing twin plugs and 4-into-1 exhausts that improved efficiency. Then in 1981, with Eddie Lawson at the helm, the Z1000 J finally climbed to the top of the podium at the AMA Championships.
Based on this Z1000 J, the Z1000 R1 is equipped with a handlebar-mounted fairing taken from another Kawasaki machine - the GPZ1100. Equipped with a Kerker 4-into-1 exhaust, the colour scheme is lime green with blue and white stripes.
