Description[]

In 1981, Eddie Lawson rode Kawasaki to a much anticipated AMA Superbike Championship victory. To commemorate this win, Kawasaki released the Z1000 R1 Lawson Replica the following year. Based on the R1000 J and equipped with a bikini fairing and a 4-into-1 exhaust, a total of 900 units of the Z1000 R1s were delivered to Kawasaki fans around the world.

This was, however, not the only "Lawson Replica." There is another machine that is also commonly referred to as the "Lawson Replica," and that is the Z1000 S1. Thirty of these machines were manufactured to clear AMA's homologation requirement of more than 24 machines. By clearing this requirement, the Z1000 S1 could then be considered a production racer. Based on this Z1000 S1 production racer, this machine has been tuned to fall just inside regulation. With a 3.00-18 magnesium wheel at the front and a 4.25-18 magnesium wheel at the rear, the braking system consists of two 330mm diameter disc rotors with 2-pot calipers at the front and a 230mm diameter discs with 2-pot calipers in the rear. A 9-inch 13-level oil cooler is rubber-mounted to cope with the added heat dissipation that is caused by the power increase.

In 1983, the AMA series underwent a regulation change that reduced the allowable maximum displacement to 750cc. As the last Kawasaki 1000cc racer to ride in the AMA Superbike series, this model remains popular to this day.
