Powered by a water-cooled, four-stroke 1,164cc engine with dual overhead cams, 4 cylinders and 4 valves per cylinder, the ZRX1200R appeared in 2001 as the successor to the ZRX1100. The 1200R inherits the same ram-air system from the 1,052cc R1100, but the engine itself has a larger bore and stroke and sleeveless coated cylinders, which are lighter and more durable.
Combustion efficiency is improved by the concave pistons and spherical combustion chamber, while the CVK 36mm carburettors featuring Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control (K-TRIC) makes for more faithful response to the rider's driving actions. The Kawasaki Clean Air (KCA) system reduces exhaust emissions.
Mounted to the double-cradle frame is an aluminium swing arm with a special elliptical-cross-section truss design. Fully adjustable suspension is installed in the front and rear. Under the seat is a useful 366 cubic-inch storage compartment, and there are also luggage hooks on the passenger grab handles. An immobiliser is installed for theft protection.
The seat is slightly high and built to let the rider feel the suspension action. The sharp revving of the 1,200cc class engine gives the bike a more nimble feel than a 1,300cc machine.
The light, nimble ride and exhilarating acceleration—the bike's main appeal—are due to the solid chassis and optimised suspension settings. Because of the 1200R's slightly high centre of gravity, roll resistance during banking turns feels natural and is pure fun.
Other selling points are the chassis's faithful response to the throttle, transmission of just the right amount of vibration and bumps from the road to let the rider monitor surface conditions, and the perfect braking touch, with sharp braking. This is a machine exquisitely crafted for sport riding, but speed isn't all there is to this masterwork—it also lets the rider experience the thrill and pleasure of a naked bike.
