Description[]
Released in 1992, the Zephyr 1100 has old-school styling, right down to the classic teardrop-shaped gas tank. The Voyager air-cooled engine was converted from a liquid-cooled model widely used in touring bikes. This dual-overhead-cam, four-cylinder 1,062-cc power unit features twin plugs and two valves per cylinder. The centre cam chain preserves the clean look of the symmetrical engine. The back torque limiter significantly reduces engine braking.
The telescopic fork and twin rear suspension units are a classic combination for the double-cradle frame. The 18-inch front rim is paired with a 17-inch rim in the rear. Both are mounted with bias-ply tyres. Released in an era when 17-inch rims in the front and rear were mainstream, this bike is obviously designed for the old-school look and smooth cornering possible with an 18-inch front rim.
With slightly low handlebars, the Zephyr 1100 has an upright riding position, and its easy to stand at red lights. The wide seat and not-too-high footpegs help reduce fatigue during long rides. The bike feels a little heavy when turning, but on the other hand the centre of gravity feels low. The engine rumbles with the distinctive feel of an air-cooled four-cylinder unit, but vibration is surprisingly low. The roaring exhaust sound beyond 6,000 r.p.m. is part of this Zephyr's charm. The 1100 doesn't crank out extreme power, but with its extra-large displacement, its more than fast enough.
Braking force in the front and rear is direct, and the solid chassis and suspension make it easy to feel the bike's speed and monitor tyre traction during full braking.
The bike rides on the flat side, with restrained attitude changes during acceleration and braking, but then this minimises the difference between solo and two-up riding. With its simple naked packaging and a classic look that never grows old, the Zephyr 1100 will never go out of style.
