In-game description[]

This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:

The Elan pioneered the backbone frame, a chassis type still found in the Esprit. First appearing in 1962, the tiny, lightweight Elan featured a racing-derived suspension with double A-arms in front and Chapman struts in the rear, four-wheel disc brakes, fiberglass bodywork, and a dual-overhead cam 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The engine's original 105 BHP at 5,500 rpm and 108 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 combined with a curb weight of 1,500 lbs to give the Elan better performance than many larger cars - 0 to 60 in 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of over 100 mph. What it couldn't beat in a straight line it usually got by in the corners. Development continued throughout the Elan's production life, with a coupe offered from 1964. Later models used the "Big Valve" version of the engine, with a new head containing bigger valves. Despite emissions requirements that adversely affected many performance cars of the day, the 1971 Elan S4 Sprint had slightly more power to earlier Elans - 113 BHP at 6,500 rpm and 104 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 - with improved driveability. From 1967 to 1973, a 2+2 version of the Elan was also built. It was considerably larger, to hold two small people in rear jump seats, and weighed 400 lbs more than the regular Elan. Although acceleration suffered a bit, the 2+2's handling was just as good. And in any form, an original Elan is one of the best-handling cars made.
