In-game description[]

This description is taken from the PAL version of Gran Turismo 2:

The Lotus Elan of 1962 was the first Lotus to use a steel backbone chassis and a glass-fibre body, a system that the company still employs today in the Esprit. Made until 1973 it came in a number of incarnations but always stuck to a gutsy 1, 558cc Twin Cam four-cylinder engine. In Big Valve specification it would produce 126BHP which was plenty for a car that weighed just 680 kg. The first Elan drophead coupe would hustle to 60 mph in just 8.5 seconds and on to a top speed well over the ton and later cars were quicker still. The Elan specification was state-of-the-art. It had all-round indipendent suspensions as featured on Lotus racing cars, it boasted four-wheel disc brakes which were a rarity on road cars of the day and the Twin Cam engine put out more power than units twice its capacity. As with every Lotus, the car's handling and road holding were its strongest points. The Elan gripped superbly on its skinny crossply tyres and had communicative steering together with a close ratio gearbox for added enjoyment. The first Elans were all roadsters with a folding canvas roof, but soon Lotus also offered an optional hardtop for winter use and a fixed-head coupe version was introduced as well. From 1967-1973 a longer chassised Plus Two with a pair of jump seats in the rear joined the line-up. The body style evolved over the years, but the Elan remained a driver's car - small, light and eager to tackle the twistiest country lane. As well as winning a place in the hearts of many drivers, the Elan also makes the history books thanks to its starring role in the cult 1960's TV adventure series The Avengers.
