In-game Description[]

This description is taken from the PAL version of Gran Turismo 2:

The year was 1966 and Lotus owner Colin Chapman wanted to replace his lightweight Seven with a new state-of-the-art sport car. Enter the dramatic Lotus Europa. Lotus had introduced the mid-engined concept into its Formula One cars, and the Europa was one of the very first cars to bring it to the road. The Europa S1 featured a steel backbone chassis with its plastic body bonded to it for extra rigidity. The windows and seats were fixed in place and the driver had to adjust the pedals and steering wheel to get comfortable. The Europa's unusual "bread-van" styling may not have been pretty but it clearly showed where the engine went and was very aerodynamic - a feature helped by the car's almost flat underside. The Europa ran on all-round independent suspension and used Girling disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear. Power came from an unlikely source - the front-wheel-drive Renault 16. Lotus simply took the engine and gearbox, turned them round and fitted them behind the driver instead of ahead of him. Although this motor was far from being the most powerful around, in the lightweight Europa it did the business. It was only 1.6 litres in size and offered just 78BHP in standard trim (though tuners mustered as much as 126BHP from it in later years). By the time the S2 version arrived, with luxuries such as opening windows and an adjustable seat, the Europa could accelerate from 0-60mph in ten seconds and top 110mph. But, like the Seven before it, the Europa wasn't about straight-line speed. Endowed with such a sophisticated race-derived chassis, the Europa could go round corners like no other car, and its drivers put many red faces on rivals in Jaguars and Ferraris.
