In-game description[]

"The first new generation of BMW's MINIs hit the market back in 2001... And are immediately recognizable for their enduring and iconic design. This particular model is the high-performance Cooper S... Which boasts a nifty supercharged 1.6L straight-four engine. Despite its fairly rigid suspension, there's a certain fun to be had with its almost go-kart-like feel!"
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Brand Central
"The R50 MINI was the first new generation MINI Hatch from BMW. It utilizes an FF—or front-engine, front-wheel drive—layout. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, it's light, maneuverable, and can easily tackle sharp corners. This Cooper S variant takes things up a notch with an additional supercharger. You'll be surprised to see how much power it can generate in the low-mid RPM range!"
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Used Car Dealership

"The hot model of the MINI, armed with a supercharger."

In the latter half of the 1990s, BMW had bought the rights for the MINI brand and its manufacture, and in 2001 a new MINI was born.

The new MINI by BMW is 3,655 mm long, 1,690 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall, having a body that is two sizes larger than the original MINI. But with its large-diameter headlights, characteristic front grille design, and the wheel housings placed at the four corners of the car, the design had many motifs reminiscent of the original 1959 model. It is clear at first glance that it is the successor to that particular MINI.

The hot model out of the new MINI series is the Cooper S. The powerplant in the MINI is the 1.6L SOHC inline 4 ‘Pentagon’ engine developed in co-operation between BMW and Chrysler, but the Cooper S is equipped with an intercooled supercharger, as can be guessed from the large air intake on the bonnet. By doing so it is given an additional 53.2 BHP and 7.26 kgfm of torque, to produce 167.6 BHP and 22.45 kgfm torque. Combined with a special 6-speed MT, this is a small car in which the fun of driving is jam-packed.

Without a doubt, the Mini is one of the world's most popular cars. Born in Britain in 1959... Its outward appearance was left largely unchanged over the course of its 40-year production history. In 2001, it was reborn with the next-generation Mini we see here. Although double the size of its long-running forebear, its handling and styling are pure Mini. Originally a British car, next-generation models were actually developed by BMW. This change in marker is reflected in its responsive steering and excellent rigidity.

Freeman Thomas[]

Stylistically and proportionately, the 2005 MINI Cooper S is the best of its breed! I loved these when they first came out, and I still love them to this day! Note the minimal overhang and simple profile, the low beltline and all-around visibility. All of the car's horizontal lines were drawn in parallel to each other. These were the days when the MINI designers seemed to have more vision! These cars looked amazing in a variety of livery, roof colors and decals. Then there was that round central screen inside. Ah yes, the MINI just screamed fun!

Trivia[]

  • In Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the Chili Red color originally featured a white roof. It was later changed to black in subsequent games.
  • This is the first car in the series to have its model year changed, from 2006 in GT5P to 2005 in GT5. Despite this, the car's internal name (mini_cooper_s_06) was never changed to reflect the change.
    • In a similar situation, the Porsche 911 GT3 (997) '09 in GT Sport also retains its initially incorrect year in its internal name when the car's model year was quietly corrected after the car was added.
  • Some of its visual elements are actually from the 2003 model. This includes most of the interior parts as well as the car's grill and reverse lights.
  • Early GT5 screenshots depicts a blue, race-oriented variant racing against GT300 and WRC cars at Tokyo R246. Named the MINI COOPER S Tuned Car '06 (note the use of GT5P's model year), it was cut from the game, although text strings remained.[1]
    • Given the transition of some GT5P-era Concept by GT tuned cars to Racing Modifications, it is possible that it would be an RM model for the car, as many had assumed during the game's pre-release period.
