Car Index (GT7)[]

Mazda's flagship, the Atenza (Mazda 6), evolved into its 3rd generation model in 2012. It received a lot of attention as it looked just like the 'Takeri' concept car shown at the Tokyo Motor Show of the previous year, which was very popular for its beautifully flowing saloon body. But there are other factors that garnered it even more attention at its release. In the 3rd generation line-up, that fully utilised Mazda's next generation SKYACTIV technology (introduced in the CX-5), was a SKYACTIV-D model powered by a diesel engine.

The diesel engine of the Atenza is an improved version of the direct injection, 2.2 litre inline-4 cylinder turbocharged engine of the CX-5. Producing 172 BHP / 42.8 kgfm, it wakes the driver up with its powerful performance from just above idle rpm. This engine was not only combined with a 6-speed automatic but was also available with a 6-speed manual transmission, and came in both front-wheel drive and AWD. In terms of environmental performance, in addition to the 'i-stop' idle stop feature it also included a capacitor-based regenerative braking system called 'i-ELOOP' in all cars; SKYACTIV-D equipped models achieve a high JC08 mode fuel economy of 4.0 l/100 km.

The diesel engine powered cars were named the XD, with a Standard, Proactive and L package grade models. The high grade model is the L package, with luxury features starting with full leather seats. This diesel version of the Atenza was so popular it accounted for 76% of all cars sold in the first month of sale.

Café Conversations (GT7)[]

Fabio Filippini[]

The Atenza has a dynamic and elegant design. It reinterprets the classic sensuality of Italian sportscars from the 1960s... With a typically Japanese sensitivity to surfaces and details. A 4-door sedan-coupé layout... Combined with a style inspired by Mazda Design's 'Kodo' philosophy. Its soft, fluid shapes and evolving surfaces... Are enhanced by specially developed metallic colours. It's not by chance that Mazda cars are often shown in red. This is done to evoke a sort of fiery temperament defined by emotion and movement.

Ikuo Maeda[]

You might say that I made my debut with the ATENZA, a project full of memories, good and bad. I was appointed general manager of Mazda's design division back in 2009. It was all very sudden, and I was given only two weeks to prepare for my new role.

The first production car I worked on was the ATENZA. Though I nearly buckled under my responsibilities, I managed to turn a crisis into an opportunity. At the time, Mazda was searching for a new design theme for its next generation of cars. My idea was to make 'design' the pillar of Mazda going forward.

To tell the truth, my predecessor had already done a lot of work on the ATENZA. But in order to apply my next-generation design philosophy... I decided that we needed to start over what was already a project well underway. This meant redesigning parts that normally would not be touched so late in production. As a result, our design schedule for the production car was delayed by about 10 months. This made my superiors mad — I mean, really mad.

At the time, I was also working on the 'SHINARI' concept car, a vision model for Mazda's next generation. As the SHINARI was being made alongside the ATENZA, the two ended up sharing a design theme.

Indeed, the ATENZA is a car that I care for deeply. In fact, I was driving it until very recently. Although it is over a decade old, it has a timeless design. You know, the more one works on standard cars, the more one comes to appreciate the power of design. Sedans are particularly difficult because of how basic they are. This is why the mark of a true designer is their ability to design timeless cars for orthodox categories.
