The Atenza, known in Europe as the Mazda 6, changed to its 2nd generation model 5 years after its debut. Although the 1st generation model was a slightly large model for its type at the time, this grade has increased in size as a rule and this has become the standard size for a medium-class car.

Its design concept was to produce the ultimate high-speed, long distance tourer, to allow safe and comfortable drives during high speed tours on European roads. For this reason, it was designed to achieve high marks in both the reduction of road noise, and efficient aerodynamics.

The body size and wheelbase were enlarged, making the interior passenger space significantly larger. The interior combines leather and metal, creating a combination of dark and light, and the design of the meter panels give them the appearance of floating in mid-air.

The power unit was enlarged from the previous 2.3 L to 2.5 L, but this was not in the pursuit of more power. By tuning it for abundant torque, it achieves a flexibility that is useful in a long distance tourer. The 5-speed AT feels good, allowing the driver to enjoy every driving condition from cities to winding roads without stress.

The sport grade model 25Z is given 18-inch tyres, and it matches the car well, due to the same suspension tuning geared for European specs.

Mazda maintained their stance of being less expensive than their rivals, and it is one factor which raised the popularity and gained good reviews for this model.

Trivia

• In the Japanese Gran Turismo 5 Prologue demo, it has a (2007 Tokyo Motor Show reference exhibit) suffix, which indicates that the in-game car is the presentation model shown at said show.
  • In said demo, it only had one playable color; Velocity Red Mica.
• A light gray scenery car resembling this car appears in GT5P (High Speed Ring and Fuji only), GT5, and GT6.
  • This is also the only scenery car along with a Volvo station wagon from the GT5P era to have only one color (excluding box trucks and other vehicles)
  • Additionally, in GT5P, this scenery car is the only car to have a playable and a scenery state in the same game it appears.

However, for tracks that first appeared or returned in GT5 or GT6 (if the track contains the scenery prop), its front end was changed, the same traits (including on the rear) also happens to the other GT5P era scenery vehicles in the first colors that they came with.
