You know, from the start, I wanted to give this Roadster a timeless design. It's full of that sentiment which compels an owner to wish their car a goodnight. I've even heard of fans who chose to sleep in it the very first day they had it in their garage. Truly, it's the car you'll name, throw birthday parties for and one day lovingly restore... There was this one time I received a wedding invitation from a total stranger living in Texas. And I thought to myself, 'Maybe its an owner of a Roadster?' So I contacted the Roadster Club of Texas... And found out that the happy couple had met at the club, and that one had a red car while the other a white one. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the wedding, But a year later I received word that they had given birth to a baby! So I painted a miniature model of a Roadster in Pink and sent it to them. Being able to connect with owners like this is really gratifying for me as a designer. But it wouldn't be possible without the passion of everybody who worked on the car!

The Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA Special Package) '89, called the Mazda MX-5 (NA) '89 in Europe and Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA) '89 in North America, is a first-generation MX-5 produced by Mazda. It has featured in every mainline Gran Turismo game. Although not initially available in Gran Turismo Sport, it was later introduced as part of Update 1.34, released on March 5, 2019.

Colors[]

Four (five in GT1 and GT2) colors are available for this car:

  • Classic Red
  • Crystal White
  • Mariner Blue
  • Silver Stone Metallic
  • J Limited/Sunburst Yellow (GT1 and GT2 only; split off in GT4)

In-Game Description[]

Car Collection (GT7)[]

An incredibly popular model that triggered a compact sportscar trend around the world.

*The Eunos Roadster was sold as the Mazda MX-5 in Europe and as Mazda MX-5 Miata in the US.

The Eunos Roadster was the car that revived the lightweight sportscar category at the end of the 20th century. With a lightweight, compact body, a 1.6 L straight-4 DOHC engine, and a rear drive layout, it was a very traditional, lightweight 2-seater cabriolet.

The Japanese release was in September 1989. Initially the engine was the 1.6 L, B6ZE, producing 118.3 BHP and 14.0 kgfm of torque. An aluminium powerplant frame connected the transmission and the rear differential, successfully creating a direct and rigid shift feel. A newly developed double wishbone suspension was used all around with four-wheel disc brakes, and it is said that everything relating to driving on this car was designed with a total disregard for cost. This is probably why driving the Eunos Roadster is often compared to the exhilarating feel of riding a horse, even more so because it is a cabriolet. The fundamental pleasure and the ability to control this car to your will captured the hearts of both new and veteran drivers everywhere.

In August 1993, some minor changes were implemented and a new 1.8 L DOHC, BP-ZE engine was introduced, raising the power to 128.2 BHP and 16.0 kgfm of torque.

In the 2nd minor change of August 1995, the final gear ratio and flywheel were modified, evolving towards the 1800 Series 2.

Many limited edition models were produced for the Eunos Roadster, and with Mazda having produced 531,890 units through to the end of 1997, this model set the world record for production of a 2-seater cabriolet and is even registered in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Used Cars (GT7)[]

This little beauty's the perfect choice for an aspiring sports car driver. Nice and light, with a decent amount of power—and the key point is that it's rear-wheel drive! So it's perfect for those who are still learning the ropes. The Roadster's got a long history, but the NA is the original and, some would say, the best!

Café (GT7)[]

Chris[]

Now this is a true icon—it can truly be said to have changed the history of the racing car. In addition to its really familiar styling, it's got a top that can be folded down easily and a snug cockpit. What's more, at the time of release, it was very reasonably priced. The market for convertible lightweight sports cars— those ones that make you feel at one with your vehicle—Well, it was virtually at the point of extinction. This was the saviour which revived an entire genre of cars.

Tom Matano[]

Trivia[]

GT5 TEST WED car3

The unused wedding variant version of the Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA Special Package) '89. The thumbnail's style resembles that of a GT5P car thumbnail, even though this car does not appear in that game.

  • An unused thumbnail, featuring the car with wedding decorations, can be found in GT5's files along with the Ferrari 599 '06 and Aston Martin DB9 Volante. These thumbnails are not located with thumbnail data with the rest of the game's cars, but instead as part of leftovers for wedding scene (possibly used for internal/staff use).[2][3]
  • The windshield is considered part of the Other livery layer in GT Sport and GT7's Livery Editor. This allows the player to have "mismatching" body and windshield color, such as what the J-Limited II (yellow body, black windshield) model had.
