The Familia BF model, the 6th generation from its debut in 1985, was a version maintaining the concept of the previous model generation. About 9 months later in October 1985, the GT-X model was added as the first in Japan to adopt a full-time 4WD, with a DOHC turbo power unit combined with it. This was the first power unit in the 1.6-litre class to combine an in-line 4-cylinder DOHC with a turbo, which resulted in 140ps/6000rpm and 19.0kgm/5000rpm, which was phenomenal at the time. It was equipped to communicate this power to the centre differential-style 4WD. It also featured a height control that could alter the vehicle height by 30mm. A sedan version was added in 1986, and the GT-Ae with high-octane specifications yielding 150ps was added in 1987. A full model change was moade in February 1989, and the Familia evolved to the BG model, which was the 7th generation. The model initially positioned as the top model in the series was the GT-X. The outstanding feature of this 7th generation was that, with its displacement increased to 1.8 liters, it had an amazing maximum output of 180ps, attaining 100ps per litre. The torque was also increased to 24.2kgm. The 4WD system was based on the previous generation, but also had a torque spilt function that could unevenly distribute the drive power. The GT-X was the step prior to the appearance of the GT-R, the Familia with the strongest specifications of them all.
