With the FD3S,[1] a third-generation RX-7 which debuted in December 1991, Mazda created a world-class sports car. After a second minor change, in January 1996, the RB was added to the lineup as a low-priced version of the RS.
Like the other models, the RB features highly original styling. Its liberal use of organic, three-dimensional lines makes it seem almost animal-like. Attention to detail is luscious. The roof features a double-bubble design reminiscent of sports cars of days past. The intercooled sequential twin-turbo 13B-REW engine features numerous improvements over the previous 13B that boost maximum power to 261 BHP at 6,500 rpm and maximum torque to 217 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm.
Befitting a '90s sports car, the 1997 Type RB[2] combines this excellent performance with precise handling, sharp steering response, and considerable linear stability. Engine placement makes possible a 50:50 front/rear weight distribution.
The double-wishbone suspension features gas-pressurized twin-tube standard dampers in the front and rear. Standard coil springs are used. The RB Bathurst was released at the same time as the RB with special upgrades and a price that places it midway between the RB and the RS.
