The Mazda RX-7 Type RS (FD) '97 is a road car produced by Mazda. It only appears in Gran Turismo 2, being overshadowed by its Type RS-R trim equivalent.

The FD3S was a third-generation RX-7 released in December 1991. This FD was dubbed the Efini^[1] RX-7, and it was sold through the Efini^[1] sales channels that Mazda had just established around that time.

The styling - even more sportscar-like than that of the second-generation models - combined the low form made possible by its rotary engine layout with the wider, more stable design of its new Class 3 size.^[2] The 5-speed manual transmission-equipped Type R 4-seater became the "Type R-S" with the '95 models, which were released in March of that year. They were then renamed "Type RS" following a minor change in January 1996.

The Type RS's engine was based on the previous FC models' 13B engine but with improvements in the intake, exhaust, cooling, lubrification, electrical and other systems, as well as a newly developed sequential twin turbocharger. The first models delivered a maximum output of 222 BHP at 6,500 rpm and^[3] a maximum torque of 217 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm, but further engine upgrades that were part of a minor change in January 1996 boosted maximum output to 261 BHP. The front engine/rear drive layout was actually closer to a low, front-mid layout to assure proper front/rear weight distribution.

The suspension featured a classic sportscar double-wishbone design in the front and rear and large-diameter firm dampers with a gas-pressurized twin tube construction, considered ideal for the Type RS's handling. Standard coil springs were used.
