In-game description[]
This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:
Mazda developed the FD3S as a "pure sports RE (rotary engine) car" that would make full use of the rotary engine's strengths. The third-generation RX-7 debuted in December 1991 and evolved with age. In the following October, 300 units of a limited-edition Type RZ Efini FD[1] model were sold. In October 1993, Mazda released 150 units of another limited-edition Type RZ, which had differently-sized front and rear tires and which was the first Japanese-made car to have 17-inch wheels and tires. With the March 1995 release of the '95 models, the highly Spartan Type RZ was promoted to a standard model. A two-seater like the Type R-II (sold from August 1993 to March 1995), the RZ was notably light in weight, 65 lbs lighter than the RS. The water-cooled in-line twin-rotor Model 13B-REW rotary engine was given a newly developed sequential twin turbocharger unit, whose twin turbochargers (one for low speeds, one for high speeds) are computer-controlled according to engine speed and load. Engine changes made in January 1996 boosted maximum output and torque to 261 BHP at 6,500 rpm and 217 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. The most important ride-enhancing upgrade of the RZ was its standard-equipped Bilstein dampers with gas-pressurized mono-tube structure. Coil springs with stiff settings are used to make full use of the car's maximum handling performance. This model offers the best handling of the FD3S series and allows the driver to experience a ride that is as sharp as a knife.
