In-game description[]
Mazda embarked on a new frontier when it introduced the RX-8 in March 2002. As the spiritual successor to the RX-7, it possessed rotary power, excellent handling and a stylish sports-car body, but what made the RX-8 unique were its four doors. The idea of this 4-door sports car concept first appeared in RX-EVOLV shown at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show.
Unlike the RX-7, the rotary engine in the RX-8 was naturally aspirated. Dubbed the Renesis, it wasn't as powerful as the old 13B, but burned cleaner than its predecessor, and revved higher, red lining at 9000 rpm. Output was rated at 247 HP and 159.1 ft-lb for the 5-speed manual and 207 HP and 163.4 ft-lb for the 4-speed automatic. The RX-8's power-to-weight ratio was also impressive at 0.19 HP/kg.
Mazda wanted to broaden the appeal of its rotary image car, so it opened up the cabin to accommodate four passengers comfortably. The truly innovative part came when Mazda designers adopted rear doors into the design, without the need for a B-pillar. Thus the doors swung open to reveal a large uncluttered opening for passengers to slide in and out. The RX-8 retained the sporty handling dynamic of the RX-7, thanks in part to its stiff center-tunnel chassis design, its 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, and extremely fun-to-drive nature. It truly was a sports car with four doors, but because it lacked the excitement of the RX-7, it wasn't as popular with hard-core driving enthusiasts and racers.
