In-game description[]

"The RX-Vision concept car made its first appearance at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Mazda strived to create the world's most beautiful rear-wheel drive sports car when it began development of the RX-Vision. Its distinctive styling is based on the company's "Kodo: Soul of Motion" design philosophy. Powered by a naturally-aspirated 4-rotor engine, it follows in the footsteps of the legendary 787B race car."

Car Index (GT7)[]

A sportscar was displayed at the Mazda booth of the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, and garnered great attention from its visitors. It was called the RX-VISION, with a sub-name, 'Rotary Sports Concept'.

The smooth, long nosed, short deck form, absent of any unnecessary lines or surfaces, was based on the Kodo design philosophy of Mazda, and pursued the ultimate beauty of a front engine, rear wheel drive sportscar. Its silhouette was a tell-tale sign of its 2 seater, front midship layout.

While details were not disclosed, the engine was described to be the next generation Skyactiv-R rotary engine.

The catchphrase included the words 'a dream o hopefully achieve one day' . This is also a dream that a large number of rotary engine fans around the world would like to see come in life.

Even before the street model of this car was revealed the RX-VISION GT3 CONCEPT was already drivable in Gran Turismo Sport.[1]

Did you know that, in Europe, they have an annual contest for the world's most beautiful car? Well, the Mazda RX-Vision took home the 'Most Beautiful Concept Car' award at this contest in 2016. The contest draws crowds of car connoisseurs from all over to pick the most beautiful cars of the year. The RX-Vision was the first car by an Asian manufacturer to win this award. Penned by Ikuo Maeda, it was a car that left its mark on not only Mazda but Japanese sportscar development in general.

Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2015, the MAZDA RX-VISION immediately thrilled design specialists with the masterful beauty of its sinuous and complex forms. The 'Kodo' design philosophy of applying emotional shapes to evoke fluid and natural movement... Is perfectly expressed in this spectacular concept car. Consider its low and wide body, large bonnet, and set-back cockpit. The side profile is particularly stunning. This is owing to a controlled use of soft textures and light reflection. Almost evoking a kind of Japanese lacquer, the flaming red livery... Helps to amplify the liquid appearance of the RX-VISION's beautiful sheet metal surfaces.

Ikuo Maeda[]

The RX-VISION is the car on which I staked my very identity as a professional designer. With it, I attempted to give shape to the ideal sports car I had in my mind.

A key part of designing any sports car is deciding on a fundamental structure. Every car that's stood the test of time is graced with exceptional proportions. So my first priority with the RX-VISION was settling on its structure. I started with a textbook FR design — that is, a long nose and rear-biased weight distribution. Then, at the last minute, I extended the front nose by about 150mm. Specifically, the section from the front doors to the centre of the front wheels. This ultimately resulted in a slightly unbalanced design... But as it added a lot of traction to the rear wheels, I thought, 'Hey, this could work!'. And so a quirk became a hook, and one of the car's little surprises.

Another surprise is its reflectivity. Take a walk around the RX-VISION and you'll get the sense that it is a living, breathing thing. Cars are like family or friends to those who love them. Unlike most industrial products, they exist to race. This makes them a bit like animals racing through the wild, or athletes racing across a field. When I first had this thought, I knew that I wanted the RX-VISION to not only be beautiful but 'alive'. To do this, I needed to give it a 'sense of life'. In contemplating how I might achieve a more natural expression... I experimented with the way light reflected off its profile. And so the RX-VISION was brought to life!

Trivia[]

  • Judging by the sound of the car, it may use the same naturally aspirated quad-rotor as the MAZDA RX-VISION GT3 CONCEPT, only de-tuned for road use.

Notes[]

  1. This paragraph is technically wrong, as the regular RX-VISION was revealed first at Tokyo Motor Show in 2015.
