In-game description[]
"The first compact model by Mercedes, with a unique layout."
At the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1993, Mercedes-Benz presented its first compact model ever in a model called 'Study A'. Four years later in 1997, the Mercedes A Class appeared on the market. Its body was designed in consideration for maximising space utility, despite the compact dimensions. A unique feature of the body is that a 2 layer sandwich structure was used for its floor. The engine that drives the front wheels is made to slide underneath the floor in the event of a collision, and it achieves a high level of collision safety even with its very short nose section.
At the time of its debut there was only a 1.6L inline 4 cylinder engine available, but in 1999 a 1.9L DOHC inline 4 was added as an option. The available gearbox was a five-speed AT equipped with a 'tip shift' mechanism, that enabled it to be operated like a manual transmission. Additionally in Germany, a 1.4L model and a 1.7L diesel models were also offered. In 2001, the long wheelbase L model, which lengthened the normal A Class wheelbase by 6.6 inches, from 95.4 inches to 102.1 inches, was added to the line-up.
Although its compact size may suggest otherwise, the driving experience is very characteristic of a "Mercedes-Benz". Driving through the streets is made easy with a high eye level, enabling drivers to get a good sense of their surroundings. Even during high speed cruising, it gives the driver a high level of stability equivalent to luxury class cars. Immediately after its debut, a fault was found in the car's control stability, but Mercedes-Benz dealt with and resolved the problem in just four months.
