The 1886 Mercedes-Benz Patent Motor-Wagen is regarded as the first patented car in the world. With less than one horsepower, three wheels, a look similar to a park bench, and a speed of less than 20 mph, its performance is unimpressive by today's standards, but were admired then.

This machine only appears in Gran Turismo 4.

Performance[]

The car's performance is lacking; a quarter-mile time of 1'04.78 (just under rev limit), only 500 rpm, a top speed of 10-11 mph (when you hit the limit, it decreases to 4), and if you have a Dualshock 2 controller, the steering motion appears unnatural, more apparent than on other vehicles. Because of its low horsepower and top speed, it will struggle in almost any uphill sections, and in theory, if taken to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, a lap attempt would be all but impossible.

The driving physics are also way off as well, as the car slides around if you turn too suddenly, whereas if you were to do the same in real life, you'd either break something, or flip over. All in all, a very unique and interesting vehicle.

Trivia[]

  • Strictly speaking, this model of the Motor Wagen only made about 2/3, or 0.66 horsepower; equivalent to about 500 watts.
  • It is the oldest vehicle in the entire series, beating the Mercedes-Benz Daimler Motor Carriage 1886 by a few months.
    • The cars are also tied for being the slowest in the series.
    • Interestingly enough, if both cars are entered in races somehow, their fuel gauge is not displayed, and their tires are always colored light green.
  • In Gran Turismo 4, nitrous can't be applied on this car.
  • Despite being a Road car In Gran Turismo 4, it cannot be sold, only discarded from the garage.
  • Both this and the Daimler Motor Carriage are the only cars in the series not to use conventional rubber on their tires.
  • Furthermore, this, the Daimler Motor Carriage, and the Lunar Roving Vehicle LRV-001 '71 are the only vehicles in the series not to use a steering wheel as a mean for turning. In this case, it features a crank that can be turned and twisted in order to steer.
  • With the help of a glitch, it can be used in the Arcade Mode races. However, it will only face one opponent.
