This small sports coupe is called a Mercury Cougar in the States, and a Ford Cougar elsewhere. Underneath the radical, angular "New Edge" design body is a chassis platform shared with the U.S. Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, and the European Ford Mondeo sedans. The Mondeo was rated as one of the top-handling sedans in Europe and the Cougar coupe, introduced in 1998, takes its abilities a stage further. The Cougar's body is stiffer than the Mondeo/Contour's and both the ride height and center of gravity are lower, improving handling. The independent suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and Ford's unique "Quadralink" system at the rear, and is firmer than that of its sedan cousins. The result? Less body roll in the corners and improved cornering. The Cougar line-up features two-models with the choice of "Zetec" 2.0-liter 16-valve four-cylinder power with 125 BHP at 5500 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, or the rev-happy "Duratec" 2.5-liter 24-valve V6 with 170 BHP at 6250 rpm and 165 lb-ft of torque at 4250 rpm. Particularly with the V6, the little cat is energetic and playful. It's not the raw muscle car it was named after, nor it is the soft "personal luxury coupe" that its namesake became. It's a well-balanced, modern sports coupe.
