Mid-Engine Challenge (known as Midship Challenge in the PAL version of the game), also informally referred as MR Challenge (a name first used in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec) is a 3-leg race series exclusive to mid-engine, rear-wheel drive cars in Gran Turismo 2.

- The third race of this event features the Wiegert Vector W8 Twin Turbo as a possible opponent car, despite exceeding the 591 BHP limit by 43 BHP.
- Despite the name, mid-engine four-wheel drive cars are not admitted to the event, but they can enter 4WD Challenge instead.
- The event's PAL name would be used for a GT League event in Gran Turismo Sport.
- Despite being listed as V8 SE in the game, any Lotus Esprit that appears in the third race will have the body of a Lotus Esprit V8 GT '98, as evidenced by the lack of a rear wing.
