In-game description[]

"The ultimate turbo spec Airtrek that takes its heritage from the Lancer Evolution."

Introduced in 2001, the Airtrek is Mitsubishi's new generation crossover. This all-around vehicle combines the luggage space of a mini-van, the sporty handling of a station wagon, as well as the off-road capabilities of a cross country 4WD.

Added to the lineup the following year was the Turbo R model, and, as the name implies, this model focused on driving performance. In comparison with the non-turbo 4-speed AT of the other grades, this hot model is the only one equipped with a 5-speed automatic and turbocharger.

Its performance levels are no surprise when you learn that the power unit is the 4G63 series inherited from the Lancer Evolution. Based on the engine of the 7th generation Lancer Evo, this 2.0L inline 4 cylinder optimized for SUV use generates 35.0 kgfm of torque at just 2500 rpm, and at 5500 rpm the maximum output is 237 BHP. While having this much power under the hood, it was still certified as a "Good Low-emission Vehicle" by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The drive system is also the same full-time 4WD as the Lancer Evolution, and with MacPherson struts up front and multilink suspension in the rear, the setup is also the same. However, the Airtrek does not have the rock hard suspension settings of the Evo, and it is allowed a certain amount of roll which makes it easier to drive.

An SUV's identity these days is decided by its mixture ratio of cross country 4x4, station wagon and minivan characteristics. However in the Airtrek Turbo R, the bloodline of the Lancer Evolution runs strong, making it quite unique among SUV's.

Trivia[]

  • There is a playable Gran Turismo Concept-based demo featuring this car named Gran Turismo Concept: Airtrek Turbo Special Edition. This demo features Autumn Ring and Swiss Alps as playable tracks, the latter ostensibly highlighting the car's crossover SUV status.
  • The Airtrek is part of the Mitsubishi Outlander's lineage, as Mitsubishi dropped the Airtrek name for the second-generation model (introduced in 2006) in Japan. This fact is not reflected in the description text from GTPSP onwards.
