In-game description[]
"The ultimate Galant GTO, armed with a DOHC head and twin carburettors."
In the 1970s, Japanese cars were finally starting to be taken seriously around the world. In the midst of this, Mitsubishi added a hot sports coupe to the Galant line-up, named the GTO.
The GTO name expressed their global intent. It is an abbreviation of Gran Turismo Omologata, originally coined by Ferrari in the 1960s with their 250 GTO. It was a strategic name, implying that it was a base car that had cleared the FIA homologation for GT race participation.
While its overall package was close to the standard Galant, it had a bold fastback design, as well as a masculine front with four headlights. Its design seemed to be influenced by cars like the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda, and with its symbolic orange body colour and black stripe, it really did have that aura of an American muscle car.
The top of the line model of the GTO was the MR. This symbolic name was kept exclusive to this car, as an ultimate symbol of Mitsubishi Sportscars, until the appearance of the Lancer Evolution VIII 30 years later. The car was equipped with DOHC which was still rare in Japanese cars, along with Solex twin choke carburettors, which allowed the 1594 cc 4 cylinder engine to crank out 123 BHP, sending the driver to never before seen speeds of 200 km/h.
Aside from specifications on paper, the GTO-MR truly expressed its presence as it roared when the accelerator was floored. Though a 2000GSR appeared later (with a bigger engine and even faster off the line due to its better low-end torque), the MR was still far superior in that edgy, primal instant as it pounced forward.
