This car appears to be the #46, driven by Joginder Singh, who finished 11th in the 1974 World Rally Championship season, scoring a win at the East African Safari Rally.
"Achieved an overall win in Safari racing. This rally car is the direct ascendant of the Lancer Evolution."
Mitsubishi released the Lancer 1600GSR in February of 1973 and entered it in the Southern Cross Rally at the end of the same year. By replacing the SU carburetor with a Solex carburetor, swapping camshafts and adopting a 4-2-1 type exhaust manifold, the power of the 1.6-liter SOHC inline-4 was raised from 108 HP to 158 HP.
The Lancer, with its lightweight body and powerful engine, won the Southern Cross Rally, and the following year contested in the Safari Rally, the first round of the World Rally Championship. With a distance of 3728.3 miles over five days, the Safari Rally was the most grueling race in the WRC. Mitsubishi engineers worked around the clock to get the Lancer ready for the grueling race, but they ran out of time. Therefore, the car started the contest in an unfinished state, as additional work was conducted at service points throughout the race. Nevertheless, the car won the overall title. The driver was Joginder Singh, an Indian resident of Kenya. Singh and the Lancer dominated the Safari Rally again in 1976. The car won Southern Cross Rally four years in a row starting in 1974. After that, due to the energy crisis and environmental regulations, Mitsubishi's motorsports activities were temporarily suspended, but the knowledge gained here would later be inherited by the Lancer Evolution.
This car can only be obtained by winning the Evolution Meeting.
