In-game description[]

This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:

Mitsubishi put its Minica light cars through a full model change in January 1989 to challenge Suzuki and Daihatsu, then the hands-down leaders of the light sports model market. One result was the top-of-the-line Minica Dangan series.

The first production cars to receive a 5-valve DOHC engine, these cars also had a turbocharger and so easily reached the 63 BHP voluntary limit. In August 1989, Mitsubishi took the offensive, expanding its lineup from front engine/front drive to also include full-time all-wheel drive with a hydraulic-coupling center differential.

New Japanese automobile tax regulations went into effect in March 1990, raising displacement and body size limits for the light-car designation. Nevertheless, the turbocharged DOHC-engined Dangan ZZ actually grew four inches shorter in length while retaining a displacement that was now 100cc below the maximum.

That is because the car's DOHC 3-in-line turbo engine, despite its 550cc displacement, already generated a maximum output of 63 BHP at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 55 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm. Just how powerful the Dangan ZZ's engine was can be seen in comparison with later versions of the Dangan Si, whose 660cc engine generated a maximum output of only 51 BHP at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 41 lb-ft at 5,700 rpm. The Dangan ZZ was fitted with front strut suspension, 3-link rear suspension, front disc brakes, and rear drum brakes.
