In-game description[]

"Surely you've heard of Nismo, right? Nissan's legendary motorsport division? In 2004, Nissan released the R34 GT-R Z-tune, the ultimate complete tuner car, to mark its 20th anniversary. Since the Z-tune was based on the discontinued R34 Skyline GT-R, it needed to be crafted from chosen pre-owned examples. But that didn't make it any less of a Nismo. Take the engine, for example—a 2.8-liter RB26DETT, purpose-built for Super GT. There was also the precision spot wielding, CFRP parts, re-tuned suspension and brakes, and newly developed aero parts. Fewer than 20 were ever build, yet the Z-tune became a defining milestone in the second generation of the GT-R legacy.[1]"
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Brand Central

In 2004, Nismo—now known as Nissan Motorsports & Customizing—celebrated its 20th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the team set out to build the ultimate road car, a showcase of two decades of motorsports know-how. The result was the Nismo R34 GT-R Z-tune.

By then, however, production of the R34 Skyline GT-R had already ended. To overcome this, Nismo sourced 20 carefully selected used cars that met strict criteria, then stripped them down to bare shells for a complete, hand-built reconstruction.

Every component added was engineered to meet the high standards of the Z name. At the heart of it all was the RB26DETT Kai-Z2 engine. The engine was based on the same 2.8-liter setup used in the GT500 GT-R of that era. It featured strengthened internals, from the pistons and rods to the block, for maximum reliability under extreme use. The IHI turbochargers were proven in the 2004 Nürburgring 24-Hour race. And the titanium exhaust system helped improve catalytic performance and flow.

To enhance chassis rigidity, additional spot welds were applied in key areas like the door frames, while section, vulnerable to heat-related distortion were reinforced with molded CFRP parts. For suspension, Nismo worked with SACHS to develop specially tuned bolt-on dampers, drawing on SACHS's GT500 expertise. Bespoke brake components were co-developed with Brembo to achieve. 1.6G of braking force on semi-slick tires. The exterior was also reworked with a focus on reducing weight, improving cooling, and enhancing aerodynamics. In particular, the front bumper, fenders, and hood were replaced with CFRP parts.

In the end, only 19 units were produced—including the original prototype—but the R34 GT-R Z-tune remains, without question, Nismo's crowning achievement among the second wave of GT-R models.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The credits of the Gran Turismo film showed a scene of an R34 GT-R often assumed to be the Z-tune being scanned; however, the scenes are dramatized and does not actually take place at Polyphony Digital's studios. (Typically, Polyphony Digital would travel to the location of a car's owner, such as an automaker heritage museum, if they needed to scan a car; the scene depicts the process as taking place in Polyphony Digital's studios.)
    • It should be noted that the car in the scene is not actually a Z-tune, but rather a standard R34 GT-R model with the Z-tune's front bumper installed, given it does not have the rear fender extension from the actual car.
  • At Cr. 3,000,000, it is currently the most expensive Professionally Tuned car in GT7.
    • Because of it costing over 1,000,000 Cr, it is not part of the Used Car Dealership rotation, despite the model year. A similar case also occurs with the Lexus LFA '10.
  • Installing the Type B side and rear parts without a widebody installed reverts it to the state of the non-V・spec base model.
  • Installing the Type A front grille option removes the Nissan and "Nismo Z-tune" logos on the rear, without removing the GT-R badge on front.
  • Both the car's wide body itself and the Type B front part (with wide body installed) are based on that of the Nissan FALKEN☆GT-R '04, minus fog lights.
  • Likewise with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR GSR '04, decals can be applied on the intercooler.
  • Prior to the Z-tune being added to the game, M. Iida in Japanese 4WD Challenge 600 and E. Yamade in the Special Stage Route X Clubman Cup Plus race both drive a regular R34 GT-R loosely styled after the R34 Z-tune, albeit with a custom wing.
