The 180SX made its[1] debut as the hatchback version of the S13 Silvia, and was strengthened by a string of modifications until 1995 when it underwent wholesale alterations. Its basic mechanical features remained unchanged, but its styling was refashioned along more sporty lines. The front was given a new spoiler, the side-step reinforced, the rear lamps rounded, and a rear spoiler added. The top-of-the-range Type X[2] and the next-level-down Type R[3] feature the turbocharged SR20DET developing 220 PS and 28.0 kgm. The basic-grade Type S[4] runs off an NA SR20 engine producing 160 PS and 19.2 kgm. The tail control generated by the axle work is a pleasure unique to rear-wheel-drive cars. It is not a car that can depend on pure brute force, so half of the fun is in using one's driving skills to get the most out of it.
