In-game description

This description is taken from the description page in GT5. It is transcluded from here.

What started out as a mere concept by Nissan became a reality with the Be-1. First shown at the 1985 Tokyo Motor Show, the Be-1 was so favorably received that Nissan decided to mass produce the quirky car, making it available to consumers just 15 months after it made its debut.

The first-generation 3-door March became the Be-1's mechanical foundation, as Nissan utilized its platform and engine. Its name came from the original in-house design designation: "B draft, No.1," and the car came to be known as Nissan's first "Pike Car," which translated into "sharp" in Nissan lingo.

Unlike many cars of its era, resin was used instead of steel for the body, mainly because it was easier to shape the car's subtle curves. Another truly distinctive feature was the car's electrically-operated canvas top that further distinguished this Nissan from other cars in the marketplace. But one look under the hood revealed that the Be-1 would never be mistaken for a sports car; sitting in the engine bay was a 987 cc SOHC inline-4 that produced 51 HP. But the retro-style Be-1 performed just well enough to capture the hearts of the Japanese public.

Nissan limited production to only 400 units a month for this mostly-handmade car, and within four days of being released, the entire run of 10,000 units was completely sold out.
