In-game description

"The commercial version GT-R in its masked state."

The prototype of the Nissan GT-R was announced in 2005, and its debut was promised for the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. This "Black Mask" spec is the temporary masked state of the GT-R that was seen from time to time until its release on October 24, 2007. The body is over 90% visible, but the front and rear as well as the door handles are hidden by a black cover, giving off a definite aura that this is not your ordinary car.

These types of disguises are applied when performing road tests with new unreleased models, but it is rare for the car's body to be this visible. The reason is most likely that Nissan wished to collect data that is as precise as possible.

After being sighted on the Nurburgring in the spring of 2007, it was also seen later at several circuits in the U.S. Its transformation from a fully covered version to this gave an impression that the GT-R development was indeed nearing its final stages.

Sections that are common with the 2005 prototype are left bare, while the front mask and tail end is covered. This look stimulated the imagination, and onlookers could sense that this mysterious car was definitely not meant for ordinary speeds.

In June of 2007, it also appeared unexpectedly at the "Goodwood Festival of Speed" in the UK, surprising the visitors. It was unprecedented for a new model just before its release to appear at this legendary motorsports festival. And finally on the day of the announcement, the GT-R was unveiled simultaneously at the Tokyo Motor Show in real life, as well as online through Gran Turismo.

Trivia

  • In Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, this car originally lacked an interior view, due to its appearance as a playable vehicle in the free downloadable demo before the reveal of the production version Nissan GT-R (R35).
    • In the same demo, this car originally appeared with the "Ultimate Metal Silver (4M)" color option. Said color was later replaced with the "Super Black" color in the final version, likely due to the latter color being better suited to conceal the car's body.
  • This is also the only car in the international versions of GT5 Prologue to not appear in the dealerships.
