Team Oreca, a well-known private race team based in France, was established by Hugues de Chaunac in Magny-Cours in 1972. In just three years, the team dominated the FIA F2 with Jacque Laffite. Since then, Team Oreca has developed a reputation for opening the door to Formula 1 for up-and-coming race drivers. Notable F1 pilots such as Arnous, Aleli, Ickx, Boutsen, Prost, Tambay, and Pironi all drove for Team Oreca.
This team isn't limited only to formula racing, but has expanded its reach into sports-car racing where it has had a glorious run, winning a variety of contests that include the 24-hour endurance races at Le Mans and Daytona, not to mention the FIA-GT, WTCC, and Rallycross. Team Oreca also designed and manufactured racing engines and chassis, working at times hand in hand with major car makers. Because of Team Oreca's expertise in the racing field, Peugeot entrusted it with developing the 908HDI FAP racecar for the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans, and fielding one car under the team banner. The drivers that were assembled for the race were all French: former Formula 1 pilot Olivier Panis, French A1GP representative Nicolas Lapeirre, and Loic Duval who won the 2009 Formula Nippon title in Japan.
The car sat 4th in qualifying, right after the three works cars. For the race, Team Oreca's car overcame the mechanical problems that plagued the works team and were pursuing the Audi racecars that were lapping the track at virtually the same pace as in qualifying, even posting a remarkable lap time of 3 minutes 19.074 seconds that eclipsed the pole-position time. But just as the car was ready to make a serious move for the championship, a mechanical problem forced them to retire. It just to show how difficult it can be to win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
