In-game description[]

"The Gran Turismo Award winner, with unique asymmetric styling."

The car which received the 'Gran Turismo Award' in the 61st Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance of 2011, was this 1960 Plymouth XNR Ghia Roadster.

The designer was Virgil Exner, the legend who lead the golden years of Chrysler in the 1950s-1960s, and the XNR is a car that inherits his name. The car itself was built by Carrozzeria Ghia, who had a close relationship with Exner.

Plymouth was a brand that stood as the entry level position in Chrysler, and Exner poured in the high-performance image Chrysler built in NASCAR into this car. This concept car was made as the future of sportscars, that would rival cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Thunderbird.

The most striking feature is its asymmetric styling. The air intake in the nose, to the bubble leading to the meter hood, the flow from the headrest to the rear, is an Exner translation of aerodynamic styling of racing sportscars of the '50s. The right side of the cockpit is covered with a tono cover which makes it appear to be a single-seater at first glance, but there is a seat under the cover that makes it a fully fledged 2-seater.

The prominent fins on the sides of the body were actually a shared design feature from the Valiant, the car it was based on. Though its overly avant-garde styling prohibited the car from making it to mass production, it made major shockwaves in car designs during its time, and is a car that gives a glimpse into the depth of American Automotive History.

Hideo Kodama[]

Virgil Exner is a designer that I'm quite fond of. After working with Raymond Loewy, he served as the first design director for Chrysler, from 1953 to 1961. With designs overflowing with personality, he was the leading figure in the golden age of Chrysler design. From all of those creations, the one that stands out to me is the XNR. This concept car can be regarded as an answer to sports cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Thunderbird. It features a unique asymmetrical design, with an air scoop, interior panel and tailfin serving as accents. One might call the styling of this car outrageous, but it was very fresh.

Trivia[]

  • In GT6, this car is one of the few with an "Other" option in the Custom Parts section of GT Auto - in this case a body-coloured cover that blanks off the passenger seat.
    • In GT Sport and GT7, this car is equipped with the cover from the beginning. It is not possible to revert the passenger seat delete in GT7's GT Auto.
