In-game description[]
"The return of the GTO, this is a high-performance, rear-wheel drive coupé that can also be driven as a drift machine."
When the Camaro and Firebird disappeared from the GM line-up, rumours went about that this was perhaps the end of FR sports cars in mid range GM models.
However the Sigma Architecture of Cadillac's new FR chassis proved this wrong. GM just wanted to renew its old designs, as a part of their global strategy. To back this up, they announced a new sports FR model from Pontiac soon after. Its name was the GTO, the revival of the legendary car that brought fame to the Pontiac brand.
The GTO that went on the market from 2004 was developed by Holden, a part of the GM group in Australia. The base car was the Monaro, which already had rave reviews for its handling and power, so much so that one-make races were being held. In order to shorten development times, they cooked up this prime base car in Pontiac-style, to release for the North American market.
At the heart of this car was the LS1, a 5.7L OHV V8 producing roughly 345 BHP. And compared to the previous Firebird[1], it was not as extreme in design, and seems more like a European or Japanese car.
But its actual performance is more than respectable, with a 13.8 second quarter mile time and a top speed of 160mph. Its balance of handling and power was superb, and was highly regarded as a base machine for the Drift Grand Prix that was gaining popularity in the U.S.
