Description[]
- "On the outside, the Porsche GS Carrera looks no different from other 356 coupés of its day, but what makes this GS Carrera so special and raises its value, is the four-cam 1.5L engine that produces 98.6 HP. This engine was the most powerful version available for the 356 series at the time. It was also possible to order lighter speedster seats, and even without heaters to reduce weight. That's why the GS was not just a fast street car, but was also seen in many races. I think you'll find that it's directly linked to Porsche's illustrious past!"

Car Index[]
The 356, Porsche's first mass-produced car, made its debut in 1949 and immediately revolutionized the compact sports-car genre. An updated version of the original model called the 356A appeared in 1955 and again in 1959.
The 356A featured a rounded windshield, soft padding above the interior panels, and a horn at the center of the steering wheel. Performance of the car increased every year, ultimately leading to the 1500 GS Carrera and the 1500 GS GT Carrera, which were limited-production models billed as the GT3 of their day.
Powering the 356A was a slightly detuned version of the 4-cam engine found in the 550 Spyder race car. The road-going 1500 GS Carrera produced 98.6 HP, while the track-ready 1500 GS GT Carrera pumped out 108.5 HP. Both cars were offered as a coupé, cabriolet, and speedster.
Of particular note is that the 1500 GS Carrera was the first to go by the "Carrera" name, which has now become synonymous with Porsche.

Freeman Thomas[]
The '56 'GS' Carrera Coupe was the most powerful and most luxurious Porsche available. The '56 marks the first year of the much improved 'A' model. It was visually similar to the previous 'pre-A,' except it had the new 15" wheels... With larger rear-wheel openings and non-rolled rocker sills. The GS model has the same sill and bumper trim as the lower line models. There really isn't a visual difference... Except the rear is usually a bit lower due to the heavier 4-cam Carrera motor. The interior is the same as well, except you'll see two push-pull switches above the instruments. This is to control the dual coils specific to the Carrera motor. When you open up the rear lid is where you really see the difference! The 4-cam Carrera motor is an artistic masterpiece! And the fan shroud and assembly are gorgeous too!
