In-game description[]

"A masterpiece that brought great success to Porsche's GT race efforts in the 1960s."

Soon after its establishment in the 1950s, Porsche gained great fame in motorsports around the world with its 356 series models and genuine mid-engine racing cars derived from the 356, such as the 550 Spyder.

One important milestone that followed in their footsteps was the Porsche Camera GTS that was born in 1963. It is also referred to as the 904 GTS from its development code name, and was a sportscar that was developed to meet the changes in the Sports Car World Championships regulations of its day.

In the 1950s, the World Championship races were fought in low production, pure racing cars. But from the regulation revisions in 1961, its main event became the GT Class using mass production sportscars. And in order to compete in this GT Class, it was necessary to clear a homologation production count of 100 cars.

The Porsche Carrera GTS was developed and produced using a ladder frame that was more suited for mass production sportscars. And in order to compete in this GT lass, it was necessary to clear a homologation production count of 100 cars.

The Porsche Carrera GTS was developed and produced using a ladder frame that was more suited for mass production, that would then be covered by a light weight FRP body. For Porsche this was the first time utilizing this format. The car is also known for the low and beautiful styling by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the grandson of the founder Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. The engine mounted midship is an air cooled horizontally opposed 4 cylinder, but it was possible to mount a 6 cylinder or even an 8 cylinder for racing.

The Porsche Camera GTS showed fantastic performance from its debut with wins in races like the Targa Florio, and even achieving class victories in endurance races at the Nürburgring and the Le Mans. It also succeeded in dominating the 1964 GT Class Championship.

Legend Cars (GT7)[]

The Carrera GTS 904 is a shining star in Porsche Motor Sport's[1] storied history. Since the early 1950s, Porsche had competed in international races with the Porsche 356. All the while, they were planning for a dedicated GT race car. Essentially, they needed to be able to build 100 cars in 12 months to qualify for competition. The result was the Carrera GTS of 1963. While a plan to use the flat-six engine developed for the 911 never bore fruit... It featured a low and light body, midship engine and specially-designed suspension. No sooner than its release, it was racing all over the world. This particular Carrera GTS competed in the second Japanese Grand Prix, held in 1964. Its heated yet successful battle against Japan's Skyline is still talked about by Japanese racing fans to this day.

The Porsche Carrera GTS is hailed as one of the most beautiful cars of the 1960s. It is also known as the Porsche 904. A mass-produced sports car, its design and mid-ship chassis were clearly built to win races. As soon as it rolled off the production line in 1964, it set out to prove its might all over the world. Its performance at the famous Targa Florio in Italy is well known. The Targa Florio was a public road endurance race in Sicily consisting of a 72km track, which was lapped ten times. Competing in the Targa Florio's GT2 class in April 1964, the Carrera GTS... Beat its rivals Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Ford, and claimed a phenomenal overall victory! The drivers who made this possible were Antonio Pucci, from Italy, and Colin Davis, from England. In the same year, the Carrera GTS also won class victories at Sebring and Le Mans. And a year later, in '65, it was back at it again, at the Targa Florio and elsewhere!

Trivia[]

  • Although often referred to as the 904 (including in a section in Nissan's museum at Brand Central), it is officially named the Porsche Carrera GTS due to Porsche's trademark issues with Peugeot over model names in the "90x" nomenclature. This was also during a time where the Porsche 911 was originally going to be called the "Porsche 901".
    • Strangely, this didn't seem to carry on to later Porsche models using the nomenclature, as Porsche has raced cars branded as the 906, 907, 908, and 909.

Notes[]

  1. Written as "Motor Sport", although Porsche officially uses the single-word term for their racing division.
  2. Price as of May 2024.
