"A French blue Porsche that raced the 1956 Le Mans"

The 550/1500RS is a racing sportscar sold by Porsche from late 1954.

The 550 in its name is derived from the fact that its dry weight is 550 kg. The chassis combining a steel tube frame with an aluminum body was fitted with a 4 cam flat 4 engine producing 133.1 BHP.

The car saw significant in various races, and won its class at the 1954 Le Mans 24 hour race. In the 1955 race, it achieved 4th overall, with another class victory.

The French Blue 1500RS with Chassis number 550-0067 was a unit originally delivered to a French dealership, and also displayed at the Paris Motor show.

This is an extremely rare race car that still bears its original livery and paint from its participation in the 1956 Le Mans 24 hour race, and is said to have been owned by famed French racing driver Jean Marie Behra.

Legend Cars (GT7)[]

Did you know that the first car to ever bear the 'Porsche' name was a midship Spyder? Specifically, it was the 356/1 prototype from 1948. I guess the company was always interested in mid-engine sports cars. The 550 Spyder, introduced in 1953, is another example of the mid-engine concept from Porsche. The 550/1500RS was a variant that went on the market at the end of 1954. This specific 550/1500RS, with its blue body and white triangular stripes, is serial number 0067. It's the only 550 still wearing the same finish with which it left the factory... And that makes it pretty much priceless.

The '55 Porsche Spyder type 550/1500RS is the icon of all Porsche Spyders! A minimalist car stripped of all but what is needed! Its organic, functional form was designed by Erwin Komenda... The body designer for all the Auto-Union 'Rennwagen,' as well as the VW Beetle and Porsche 356. He really was the chief architect of the early Porsche and VW design DNA! Stylistically, the Spyder type 550 is similar to a 356 Speedster.[1] That said, it is much more capable, with its mid-engine chassis and aluminium body. The rag top roof actually serves no real purpose, except to meet the letter of the rule book! It's as if Porsche were saying to the regulators, "Look, it has a roof!" In addition to a diminutive body and short wheelbase... It has an extremely low cowl/beltline with just an aero screen. Incidentally, the Porsche Spyder type 550 was given the nickname 'Giant Killer'! This is because, in the right hands, it was capable of beating much more powerful and faster machines! Indeed, it was a popular car for sportsmen or works drivers looking to win a class victory or compete in a road rally.
