RE Amemiya, known all over the world as the premier tuner of the rotary engine, has been competing in the GT300 class of the Super GT Series since 1995 when it was still called the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC). The company's race car was a heavily modified FD3S, the third-generation Mazda RX-7.
In 2004, this racing version of Mazda's popular sports car, built in cooperation with RS Fine, switched to a new tube-frame chassis that worked in tandem with a monocoque structure, resulting in remarkable rigidity. After fine-tuning the setup for three years, the 2006 Amemiya Aspara Drink RX-7 became one of the most potent cars in its class.
The 20B 3-rotor Wankel (654 cc each) tuned by RE Amemiya pumped out 305 HP/8,000 rpm and 238.6 ft-lb at 6,500. It was mated to a Hewland 6-speed sequential-shift gearbox. The suspension system utilized a double wishbone setup at all four corners.
Drivers Tetsuya Yamano and Hiroyuki Iiri masterfully piloted the car to victory in Rounds 1 and 4 at Sepang (their strongest circuit) and Suzuka, respectively. They also took second in Round 8 at Autopolis, and 4th in both the 1000 km at Suzuka and the seventh-round race at Twin Ring Motegi. But the climax of the season came at the final round at Fuji Speedway: they made a daring pass in the final corner of the last lap, securing the Drivers' Championship for the season.
