The Renault Avantime equips a peculiar body to the highly acclaimed European minival, the Espace. Born as a design study from Renault's chief designer, Patrick Le Quement, the Avantime made its first appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999. When Renault announced their plans for releasing the car into the market in 2001, people could not hide their shock,

At first glance, the Avantime looks like a minivan, but it only has 2 doors. The inside of the vehicle is standard fare with 2 rows of seats that seat 5 passengers. Renault's explanation for this design decision was that the Avantime was to be a specialty coupe.

This becomes clear when you climb inside of the Avantime. The luxury of occupying a large mini van space with a small number of people, does define it as a specialty car. The field of vision from the rear seat is amazing. When all the side windows are rolled down, and the massive sun roof opened, you get the same sort of freedom that you would in a convertible car.

In its country of origin, there was also a 2L turbo available, but in Japan it was given a 3L, DOHC 24-valve V6. Its maximum output was 207 HP/6000 rpm and had a maximum torque of 213.3 ft-lb.3750 rpm. In keeping with its character, the Avantime's ride quality is full of composure. The abundant torque and smooth ride characteristic of a Renault is matched beautifully. The drive feel is so high in quality, even sedans and coupes are no match in comparison.

The Avantime is a stack of Renault individuality, proving that the application of a monoform body is not limited to a minivan.
