"A very unique Renault compact with no resemblance to its rivals."
The 2nd generation Renault Megane made its debut at the Paris Salon in 2002. The new design for this C segment Megane created by designer Patrick Le Quement, who headed Renault design, had a very unique style. Particularly striking was the rear view, with its perpendicular window and trunk-like hipline, it set it far apart from its rivals.
The base floor utilized the new C platform developed in cooperation between Renault and Nissan. This same floor was used in the Nissan Tiida. In France, the Megane employed a wide variety of engines both gasoline and diesel. The two engines imported to Japan were the 1.6L and 2.0L gasoline engines. The 1.6L DOHC inline-4 produced 111 HP/6000 rpm and 112.1 ft-lb/4200 rpm. The 2.0L engine produced 131 HP/5500 rpm and 141.0 ft-lb/3750 rpm. These engines are fairly standard for this class, but this was more than adequate to provide the Megane's lightweight body of only 1200 kg with nimble acceleration.
Following Renault's recent philosophies, the Megane effectively balanced ride quality with handling. With high rear stability, the Megane felt not only safe at high speeds, but presented a high-quality and fun driving experience as well.
As the Megane was intended to become a high-volume vehicle for the company, Renault prepared several body variations of the car. There was a 3-door and a 5-door hatchback in addition to a sedan, wagon, coupe, cabriolet, and a mono-form mini-van known as the Scenic. Their 222 HP sports model, the RS is another interesting car worth some attention.
