Car Index (GT7)[]

"The world's first hatchback found great success through utilitarian design."

The compact Renault 4 (also called the "Quatre") made its debut in 1961 to replace the best-selling Renault 4CV. Although the 4CV was a rear-engine/rear-drive model, or RR, the Renault 4 came with a front-engine/front-wheel-drive layout, or FF.

The car's most notable characteristic was its packaging, which became the foundation for the modern hatchback. The FF configuration allowed for a more spacious interior, including a generous luggage compartment behind the back seats.

Also unique were the Quarte's mechanical qualities. One such example was its rear suspension. It utilized two torsion bars, one for each of the rear wheels. These bars were displaced slightly, resulting in a different wheelbase for the left and right side of the vehicle. A torsion bar suspension uses the elastic force of twisting a metal bar in place of a spring, so the Quarte's setup worked almost like an independent rear suspension.

Also, the transmission was located at the very front of the car, in front of the engine. Therefore, gear changes were performed through a long rod that passed over the engine and protruded into the cabin. The driver changed gears by pushing and pulling the rod in and out of the dashboard.

Building upon the reputation for reliability that had been forged by the classic 4CV, the innovative qualities of the Renault 4 proved extremely popular, resulting in a long shelf life; it was produced for 30 years. In 1978, Renault created the ultimate version of this car, called the GTL. It featured a new plastic front grille and a peppy 1.1-liter engine, as well as a more modern instrument panel borrowed from the Renault 5.

The Renault 4 was discontinued in 1992 after a production run of about 8,135,000 units. In terms of individual car models, this record puts the car in the same league as the Volkswagen Beetle and the Ford Model T, making it one of France's greatest contributions to automotive history.

Used Car Dealership (GT7)[]

The Renault 4 is a French economy car with a long and glorious history. After making its debut in 1961, its design has essentially remained unchanged for more than 30 years. A front mid-engine car, its rear is distinguished by a large tailgate and spacious trunk. It was the first hatchback to be a commercial success. With more than eight million units sold around the globe, it was loved the world over as a practical car for everyday use! This GTL model was added in the 1970s. Its powerful engine and modern interior have made it an especially popular model in the Renault 4 lineup.
