In-game description[]

"The Mustang-based car with a great track record in SCCA racing."

The Ford Motor Company introduced the Mustang compact sportscar in 1964, and to raise its sporty image for better sales, they decided to enter the car in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) racing.

In its regulations it was possible to attain homologation if more than 100 cars were produced, but changes in the engine, suspension or brakes were not allowed. The only thing that was allowed was weight reductions based on the specifications of commercial cars.

Ford decided to produce and sell a commercial car with powerful performance, and asked the help of Shelby American, led by Carroll Shelby. The car that came forth in 1965 was the GT350, based on the Mustang Fastback.

Because the car was built to race almost as is, the hood is made of FRP with an air intake, the chassis is equipped with hard racing suspension and an LSD, and the transmission casing is made of lightweight aluminum. Being a pure racing machine, there are no rear seats, no heater, no power steering or any sound-proofing materials. Furthermore, the battery is mounted in the trunk for better weight distribution, and the spare tire is stored inside the passenger compartment for the same reason.

The engine was a tuned 4.7 L OHV high-performance 289 that was optionally available in the Mustangs, and produced 301 BHP and 45.6 kgfm torque. Of course in the SCCA races, it dominated the top ranks for 3 years straight.

Legend Cars (GT7)[]

The 1965 Shelby GT350 is a variant of the Mustang that debuted in 1964. It was a model that was born from the collaboration between Ford and Carroll Shelby... And has a fantastic history of successes in the world of racing. Ford's then general manager, Lee Iacocca, is generally regarded as the man behind the Mustang. In addition to knowing how to build cars people wanted, Iacocca understood the value of motorsport... Which is why he entrusted the Mustang's racing project to Shelby. The result of this collaboration was the GT350. Having being made specifically for racing, it is very spartan compared to the standard Mustang. But its two-seat setup and high-performance 289 engine ensured success in SCCA and other competition races.

Café (GT7)[]

Tom Matano[]

An iconic cream white body with Shelby's signature blue stripes... Were once the signs of a genuine GT Mustang. The original Mustang combined great proportions with a simple and clean design. Despite the special nature of this G.T. 350... No parts were added to its exterior due to regulations. However, it did come with a lowered suspension, wide tires and that iconic stripe. If I could own a Mustang, this would be at the top of my list.

Trivia[]

  • This car is listed as a '66 model in GT2, but a '65 model in GT6 onward.
  • It comes equipped with a 289 cubic inch (4.7 L) engine, but the displacement is incorrectly listed as 4272 cc in-game.
  • After the original NTSC-J 1.0 version of GT2, the GT350 was replaced with a slightly updated duplicate for all later versions (internally named "us36n"). The original version (internally named "us35n") is present as a hidden car in those later versions, but is only accessible via a cheat device or by purchasing it from a memory card containing the car using the trade feature.
    • Because the Arcade Mode disc included with the PSone Books version of GT2 was not updated (the GT/Simulation Mode disc was updated to NTSC-J 1.1 in that version, but the Arcade Mode disc remained at NTSC-J 1.0 revision), the updated GT350 will be treated as an invalid car if accessed from that disc's mode that access the garage, such as Home/Guest Garage option when selecting a car or if attempting to trade cars from that disc.
  • In GT2, applying a racing modification essentially turns it into the GT350R, while in GT7, the Type B front bumper, along with the widebody, is also based on that used by the GT350R.
